Philosophy
Inspired by our friends "down under," Rock Rabbit
Winery produces
richly flavored wines with supple tannins. Our Syrah is based on the Australian
Shiraz
and our Sauvignon Blanc is based on the New Zealand white wine style
which offer
everything not typically found in California wines -- Flavor, Style and Value.
What is a Rock Rabbit?
What is a Rock Rabbit? Also known as pikas or howling conies, these small
rabbits dwell in high mountain ranges across the United States. In 2001,
Rock Rabbit Winery produced its first wine, a Syrah from California's
Central Coast.
Creating the Wines
Winemaker Alex Cose will tell you his passion in making Syrah is the
blueberry and blackberry notes in the wine. He admits, "They're my
hot button!"
Regarding our new Sauvignon Blanc, Alex focuses on ripe fruit aromas
of peaches and lemons with absolutely no oak ever touching the wine. "It's
all about preserving the fresh flavors in the grapes."
Our Future
Owner Derek Benham believes in the future of Syrah. His dedication to
producing quality Syrah while maintaining his commitment to value is of
the utmost importance. Not since the pilgrimage to Merlot has Derek felt the
opportunity for a new varietal to emerge on the American scene. Australian
Shiraz opened Americans' eyes to this amazing wine's potential. Although
called Syrah north of the equator, this grape is grabbing the attention
of consumers, retailers and restaurateurs all across America.
Just as our Aussie friends have found a red wine profile appealing to
the American consumer, the folks from New Zealand have found an appealing
white wine style. Generally un-oaked, with citrus fruit and melon
flavors, these wines are crafted in a fresh, crisp and refreshing way, and
are everything California Chardonnay is not. Rock Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc
looks as good as it tastes.
